According to a new Italian study, not spending enough time under the bright, warm sunlight could negatively impact on the pleasurable activities we practice in the darkness of our bedroom. Apparently, through the study, researchers have linked an increased risk of erectile dysfunction to low levels of vitamin D.
After analyzing 143 men suffering from different degrees of erectile dysfunction, the researchers observed that almost half of they had in common a deficiency in vitamin D and that only 1 in 5 had optimal levels of this nutrient.
Moreover, those men who showed more severe dysfunction also had 24% lower levels of vitamin D than those who suffered milder cases of this condition.
According to the doctor and author of study, Alessandra Barassi, deficient levels of vitamin D can stimulate the production of free radicals called superoxide ions that deplete our oxide n Intrinsic, a molecule that helps our blood vessels function properly.
"Nitric oxide causes blood vessels to relax, increases blood flow and can have an erection under normal circumstances," said Dr. Larry Lipshultz, advisor of urology from 'Men's Health'. Without the necessary amounts of nitric acid, our blood vessels are unable to relax enough for erections to take place.
If you suffer from erectile dysfunction, control your vitamin D levels. The study recommends that people with this problem take supplements to reach the optimal level of 30 ng / ml or more.
Men who enjoy normal erectile functioning, Dr. Barassi added that she was studying whether vitamin D supplementation can act as a preventive measure to delay ED
