Giant marine elephant emerges from the ocean in Iceland

This incredible basaltic cliff located on the island of Heimaey, south of Iceland, is shaped like a giant elephant or a woolly mammoth submerging its trunk in the sea.

Heimaey is the largest island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, which is geologically a group of islands formed by volcanoes. Eldfell, a volcano in Heimaey, erupted in 1973, forcing locals to pump cold water from the sea over the lava flows in a successful attempt to redirect them and not affect their port.

The elephant of the coast of this island that has so much attraction on tourists, was also formed thanks to the volcanic basalt found all over the island.

The lowering of the water level allowed this incredible geological structure that resembles an elephant to emerge from the depths of the ocean, and has all visitors fascinated by its beauty.
