Today, the importance we give to our physical appearance is increasing. We want to feel comfortable with our body and, for that, we use millions of products, go to the gym and even resort to cosmetic surgery. The problem comes when this worry becomes obsession and we are never satisfied with our body. This is what is known as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (TDC) .
Formerly known as dysmorphophobia this somatoform disorder causes the patient to identify defects throughout his body, although in most cases they are only the result of his imagination. This increases your worry and your anxiety to excessive levels. As a result, he suffers so much psychological distress that his social and work performance deteriorates.
This disorder does not have a single cause however, most researchers agree that it could be a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors of his past or his present.
The symptoms may begin to appear in the adolescence, which is the time in which the critiques related to the physical aspect of the person are frequent. In addition, it may be accompanied by other disorders such as depression or social phobia .
Although this disease is considered one of the major risk factors for suicide, many times we give it the importance it requires. In these cases, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are essential in the treatment.
We already know cases of celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian who have confessed that they suffer from this disorder. In her day, Kim said she was too affected by criticism about her physical appearance because she suffered from body dystrophy.
On the other hand, and unfortunately, we have also seen cases like Kristyna Martelli the model that died after going through more than 100 operations of cosmetic surgery.
