4 Myths that should be denied as soon as possible about genetically modified foods

When choosing the right foods to carry a diet balanced and free of chemicals and ultra-processed products one of the main concerns is to avoid buying genetically modified foods. They are known as GMOs, and they are much more common in our diet than you think. However, around them there are a number of myths you must know.

4 Myths about GMOs and organic foods that you should know

1- Organic foods are safer because they do not have pesticides

In supermarkets, consumers have the option of buying conventionally produced foods or their organic version, which is usually more expensive.

that food manufacturers label their products as organic, they must meet the standards set by organizations and governments. The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), a non-governmental organization that promotes organic agriculture internationally, has established guidelines that have been widely adopted for organic production and processing.

These guidelines are considered as " minimum standards ", however, as organic agriculture has become generalized, many developed countries have defined their own organic standards.

In general, the cultivation of food requires the use of methods that contribute to the maintenance or improvement of soil fertility. In addition, natural inputs are generally approved and synthetic inputs banned.

Organic foods, by that definition, may not have used synthetic fertilizers or pesticides during their harvest, but the fact that a crop conforms to the definition of organic does not mean that it is totally free of fertilizer residues.

The USDA organic certification allows natural substances such as pheromones, animal vaccines, and a limited number of natural pesticides . In fact, a study conducted in 2011 by the USDA, showed that 39% of 571 organic samples analyzed had pesticide residues, although well below the tolerance established by the EPA.

2- Organic foods are healthier

Since they started regulating organic products in 1990, their advocates have claimed that eating organic foods is healthier. However, that claim is actually misleading.

After analyzing 240 studies on the nutritional value of organic foods, the researchers discovered that "lack solid evidence to ensure that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods ".

The researchers did conclude, however, that eating organically could reduce consumer exposure to pesticide residues and the possibility of ingesting antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

3- GMOs are dangerous

The ability to alter the genetic make-up of a crop has been the subject of heated debates during decades Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are cultures with genomes that have been manipulated with DNA from other organisms.

Scientists have created genetically modified varieties of crops that contain genes that protect them from pests, weeds or even certain viruses. Although the first genetically modified organisms came onto the market 23 years ago, the debate about their safety is still present.

Genetically engineered crops allow scientists to transfer desirable traits from other foods and eliminate certain harmful characteristics.

To give an example, it was discovered that the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis , is an insecticide of natural origin. Therefore, recently, bioengineers have modified the genes present in corn crops, to eliminate the insecticidal protein that contains this natural microorganism.

Genetic modifications, in many cases, cause crops are safer for agricultural workers and crops are more resistant to insects and viral infections. The latter means that plants need less pesticides to survive. In fact, they are sometimes even more nutritious.

According to the WHO, no genetically modified food has been shown to have a negative effect on human health in the countries where these practices have been approved.

4- GMOs are bad for the environment

People who oppose GMOs often highlight its supposed effect about the environment. They fear that transgenic crops suppress the natural biodiversity of an area.

Perhaps most remarkable is that they point out that GMOs require greater use of herbicides, which reduces biodiversity and makes weeds more resistant to the products. chemists.

But in reality GMOs do not cause as much damage as it may seem. In fact, a 2016 study showed that, GMO crops like corn, actually require less pesticides compared to non-genetically modified crops .

Another 2014 study showed that genetically engineered crops modified products had a 22% higher yield than non-genetically modified varieties. In addition, many GM crops need less water than organic varieties.
